Privacy Policy

What we collect (almost nothing), how we use it, and your rights. Plain English version below.

Effective April 15, 202613 sections

The short version: Chip It Rightis a read-only editorial site. We don’t ask you to sign up, don’t collect your email, and don’t build a profile of you. We use Google Analytics to understand which pages are useful, and affiliate links that set a referral cookie when you click. That’s it.

01

What we collect

We do not collect personally identifying information (“PII”) through the Site. We do not have user accounts, sign-up forms, contact forms, or newsletters that request your personal data.

What is collected in aggregate, anonymized form through standard web technologies:

  • Usage analytics via Google Analytics 4: page paths viewed, approximate time on page, referrer URL, device class (desktop/mobile), browser family, and anonymized IP address (with IP anonymization enabled).
  • Server logs from our hosting provider: HTTP request timestamp, path, response code, user agent, and truncated IP address, retained for operational and security purposes.
  • Affiliate click tracking: when you click an affiliate link and leave our Site, the affiliate network (e.g., the manufacturer’s program or a network like ShareASale, Impact, or Amazon Associates) sets its own cookie in your browser to credit our referral. That tracking is governed by the affiliate network’s own privacy policy.
02

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4), a web analytics service provided by Google LLC. GA4 uses cookies and similar identifiers to generate aggregate reports on Site usage. These reports help us understand which content is useful, how pages perform, and how to improve the Site.

We have enabled IP anonymization, which means your IP address is truncated before being stored by Google Analytics. We have disabled Google Signals advertising features. We do not share analytics data with Google’s advertising products.

If you prefer to opt out of Google Analytics across all sites, you can install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. You can also block analytics by using a privacy-focused browser or an ad blocker that includes tracker-blocking rules.

03

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies used on the Site, grouped by purpose:

  • Analytics cookies: set by Google Analytics (e.g., _ga, _ga_*). Used to distinguish unique visitors in aggregate reports. Typical lifetime: up to two years.
  • Affiliate referral cookies: set by third-party affiliate networks when you click through from our Site. Lifetime and scope determined by the affiliate network.

We do not use advertising cookies, retargeting pixels, or third-party ad-network trackers on our own pages. We do not sell, rent, or trade any user data.

You can block or delete cookies at any time through your browser settings. Blocking analytics cookies will not affect your ability to read any content on the Site.

04

Embedded content from other sites

Some pages on the Site embed content from third-party services (for example, YouTube videos). We use privacy-enhanced embeds (e.g., youtube-nocookie.com for YouTube) where available. Even with these privacy variants, embedded content can collect data about your interaction with the embed. Your interaction with embedded content is governed by the third party’s own privacy policy.

05

How we use information

We use aggregate, anonymized data to:

  • Understand which pages are most useful and improve weak ones.
  • Diagnose technical issues and improve Site performance.
  • Detect abuse, fraud, or security incidents.
  • Comply with legal obligations when required.

We do not use your data to build advertising audiences, sell you anything directly, or share with third parties for marketing purposes.

06

How we share information

We share data only in these limited circumstances:

  • With Google, as a processor of our analytics data, under the terms of the Google Ads Data Processing Terms.
  • With our hosting provider (currently Vercel) for server logs and infrastructure operation.
  • When required by law, such as in response to a valid subpoena, court order, or governmental request.
  • In connection with a business transfer, such as a merger or acquisition, with notice to users in advance.

We do not sell personal information as defined by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) or similar state privacy laws.

07

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under applicable privacy laws:

  • California residents (CCPA/CPRA):the right to know what personal information we have (we do not collect PII), to request deletion, to opt out of “sale” or “sharing” of personal information (we do not sell or share as defined), and to non-discrimination for exercising these rights.
  • European Economic Area, UK, Switzerland (GDPR/UK GDPR): the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or object to processing of personal data, and to data portability. Our lawful basis for limited processing is legitimate interest in operating and improving the Site.
  • Other US states with comprehensive privacy laws (e.g., Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon): the rights provided under those laws as applicable.

To exercise any right, email [email protected] with the relevant state or jurisdiction in the subject line.

08

Children's privacy

The Site is not directed to children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we may have inadvertently received information from a child under 13, please contact [email protected] and we will delete it.

09

Data retention

Google Analytics data is retained for up to fourteen (14) months before automatic deletion. Server logs are retained up to ninety (90) days. Neither dataset is tied to a named individual.

10

Security

The Site is served over HTTPS with industry-standard encryption in transit. Our infrastructure providers (hosting, CDN, analytics) each maintain their own security certifications. No system is 100% secure; if a security incident materially affects Site visitors, we will provide notice consistent with applicable law.

11

International users

The Site is operated from the United States. If you access the Site from outside the US, you consent to the transfer and processing of the limited data described above in the United States, which may have different data-protection laws than your own jurisdiction.

12

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected in the “Effective” date at the top of this page and, where required by law, announced by notice on the Site.
