Self-powered gas-engine woodchippers — the default category for buyers without a tractor. Ranked from homeowner units up to commercial-grade 8-inch chippers.
By Daniel Ashford
Gas-standalone woodchippers have their own gasoline engine built in, so they work without a tractor PTO. That portability and independence is the reason to buy one — if you own a tractor with enough PTO HP, a PTO chipper will give you more capacity per dollar.
MechMaxx dominates this category with five dedicated gas chippers. Woodmaxx has just one (the DC-1260, a 14 HP gravity self-feed chipper). Woodland Mills doesn’t make a gas-standalone unit.
On gas chippers the engine is the dominant driver of service life. Honda GX-series engines are the benchmark — they’re widely serviceable, fuel-efficient, and routinely hit 10,000+ hours on commercial equipment. V-twins deliver more torque but are noisier and parts are less universally stocked. Generic or private-label engines can be fine, but check warranty length and parts availability before buying.
Self-feeding vs manual feed
Gas chippers under $2,000 are usually manual-feed — you push branches through by hand. Above the $2,000 mark, gravity self-feed or powered infeed rollers become standard and are a major productivity upgrade. The Woodmaxx DC-1260 uses gravity self- feeding off the chipper drum; the MechMaxx DCH7 and up add full self-feeding rollers. The MechMaxx GS650 and B150 are still manual.
FAQ05 questions
Frequently asked questions
01
What's the best gas woodchipper under $2,500?
The Woodmaxx DC-1260 (4-inch, 14 HP Briggs Vanguard, 2-year warranty, gravity self-feed) at $2,325 is the best-built option under $2,500. The MechMaxx B150 (6-inch) fits the budget too but has a shorter warranty and is fully manual-feed.
02
What's the best gas woodchipper under $5,000?
The MechMaxx DCH7 (7-inch, 22 HP Honda GX) is the best value at this price range. Step up to the PowerDCH7 (25 HP V-twin) if you chip hardwood in volume.
03
What gas engine is in the MechMaxx DCH7?
A genuine Honda GX-series commercial engine. Service and parts go through Honda's dealer network.
04
Can a gas woodchipper handle 6-inch branches?
Yes, once you step up to a 6-inch-rated model. The MechMaxx B150 is rated for 6-inch. Below 15 HP you'll struggle with seasoned hardwood at 6 inches — plan for green wood or step up to a 7-inch model.
05
Are gas woodchippers worth the price over PTO chippers?
Only if you don't have a tractor. Gas chippers cost 30–40% more than equivalent-capacity PTO chippers because you're paying for a dedicated engine. If you own a tractor with enough PTO HP, buy the PTO chipper.
